Soft-Soled Shoes

Published by under Great Baby Gifts Ideas

Ben is 12 months and still not walking so it is too early to get him proper shoes but he often needs something on his feet especially when we are outdoors.  I use socks when he is in the pram but he tends to pull them off most of the time.  I purchased some soft-soled shoes and they are great.  They mould to Ben’s feet so he hardly notices that he is wearing them and they protect his feet.   If you are looking for a good, practical gift for a baby or first birthday soft soled shoes are the way to go.

Creating Your Own Birthday Cards

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

I wanted to do a crafty activity with Ben and at the same time make a few cards for babies that were about to turn 1.  I got together some googily eyes, pipe cleaners and paint.  I have forgotten the name of the type of painting where you put a few blobs of paint on one side of the paper, then fold the paper and squash all the paint around so that when the paper opens you have a mirror image of your design that often looks like a big blob – well that is what I did.  Ben helped with squashing the paper together, but not much else.  Once the paint was dried I stuck on a few eyes and used pipe cleaners for arms, legs or antennae and created little creatures out of the blobs.   They make great cards, all individual and they were so easy to make!!!

Peaceful Car Rides

Published by under Great Baby Gifts Ideas

We spend a lot of time in the car and have found short trips (15 Min’s) are easy to handle with a 1 year old but when the trip extends past that Ben seems to get bored and loud.   But we found a solution!!! we have a stack of nursery rhyme CD’s in the car and as soon as Ben gets cranky we put the music on and he loves it.  He will be happy for ages as long as the music keeps going.  We have 5 different CD’s and keep rotating them so we don’t get bored but it would be great to have more.   Any parent would love a baby gift of nursery rhyme CD’s – and you can never have to many!

Parachute Games for Babies

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

I did not want to spend a fortune hiring a jumping castle or a magician for Ben’s 1st Birthday party.  So I hired a large parachute from my local toy library and played parachute games with all the babies.  The kids had a great time; there were 2 activities that the babies enjoyed with the chute.  Firstly they could sit, lie or crawl around on top of the chute while all the parents and older brothers and sisters flapped the chute.  And secondly they lay, sat or crawled under the chute as it was lifted up and down or around.  There were a few tears (as you always get at 1st birthday parties) but all in all the parents enjoyed it, some of the babies enjoyed it and we got some great colourful photos.

Birthday Cake Nerves….. Learning from Mistakes

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

High expectations are put on mums (mainly by themselves) to create the perfect 1st Birthday Cake.  I was just one of those mums…..  I looked through my Women’s Weekly Kids Birthday cake book (the one I used to dream about having when I was a kid, but it never made it into our house, I could only flip through it at friends’ places and dream about having a ‘swimming pool’ birthday cake…….)  to find the perfect shape.   A 3-D duck was what I chose as I wanted something that Ben would recognise and maybe use his Baby Sign Language to chat about it.

I allowed myself lots of time to make the cake, getting everything else ready beforehand and delegating lots of jobs so I could focus on the Duck.  In the morning I made the cakes and in the afternoon sculptured and butchered them into a shape resembling a duck and then iced it.  My first mistake was baking the cake on the same day as making it.  I always thought that kids Birthday cakes never really tasted that great.  Now I know that the Birthday cake has got nothing to do with taste and everything to do with presentation!!!  So, when you do it make sure your cake is firm and err on the side of dry rather than moist.  Lucky for me that I had part of a cake in the freezer that I could use after half of my fresh cake ended in crumbs.

The other tip I would give is once you have finished sculpting your artwork cover the whole thing in a layer of apricot jam before icing; this will reduce the number of cake crumbs that end up in your icing (can you see the chocolate cake speckles on my yellow duck feathers?).

In the end I was pretty happy with the Duck, and best of all Ben thought that it was a duck and he signed ‘Duck’ whenever he saw it.

Singing and Dancing

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

Chris plays the guitar really well and has taught himself heaps of nursery rhymes.  Most days we have a little singing and dancing session where Chris plays the guitar, I sing and Ben dances (well he rocks back and forth but at least it is in time to the music!).  Ben loves it when we pause in the middle of a song and then suddenly start up again.  Ben really seems to respond to the music and enjoys his musical sessions with his Daddy.
