Finally mastered the sign for ‘eat’

Published by under Baby Sign Language

Finally Ben has started doing the sign for eat!  It has taken him about 6 months!!!  I have been teaching Ben baby sign language since he was 7 months old and he started signing back at 10 months.  At 7 months I had 4 signs that I consistently practised – Milk, Duck, More and Eat.  I wanted him to sign these first and then start to introduce others.  At 10 months he signed Milk, and at 11 months duck and more but he never seemed to ‘get’ the sign for eat.  Since then I have introduced other signs that he has signed back quite quickly.  But the other day at 13 months of age Ben finally did the sign for eat!  The pleasure that I felt when his little finger went up to his mouth to show me he wanted to eat was unbelievable!!!!

Knitted Blanket and Mini Blanket – a great baby gift

Published by under Great Baby Gifts Ideas

My mum is a pretty crafty person and gets great pleasure out of making gifts for people.  When Ben was born she knitted him a large blanket, made up of many textured coloured squares sewn together.  From about 6 months of age the blanket became Ben’s ‘comfort’ item and as long as he had his blanket to hold and fingers to suck he would sleep anywhere and be put down with no fuss.  I often go for long walks while Ben sleeps in the pram during the day and started bringing along his blanket but it was pretty bulky for a pram.  So I requested my mum to make a second mini blanket about 30cm square to use in the pram.  She made it from the same wool as the original blanket in the same design – and Ben loves it and is happy to cuddle it in the pram.

At the moment I have my mum working on  a 3rd blanket (middle size) for Ben to use at daycare when he goes in a few weeks.  So if you do have a friend or relative who loves knitting or crocheting get them to make your baby a couple of comfort blankets as a baby gift that can be used interchangeably.

The Skill of Fork Holding

Published by under General

I never thought how hard it is for a baby to learn how to use a fork.  There are so many processes involved.  They need to be able to hold the fork, have eye-hand coordination to get the fork to the food they want; they need strength to push the fork into the food and then coordination to get the folk into their mouth without stabbing their eye.  Well it seems that after a few months of practice Ben is half way there and sometimes gets some food on his fork which he is very excited to eat.  It works well for me at the moment as food (such as carrot) that Ben would normally not want to eat, if he manages to get it on his fork he is so excited that he will eat whatever he  got!!!

Camping with a 1 Year Old

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

camping.JPG

I love camping, we took Ben when he was 3 months old and it was pretty easy, he just slept and lay on a rug and we got on with relaxing and enjoying the camping experience.  It was a little bit different going camping when Ben was 13 months old but we wanted to give it a go.  So we packed the car and headed for the bush.  Ben tapped the tent pegs together as we tried to assemble the tent as quickly as possible before it got dark.  Ben had his bath in an idyllic shallow river and he went to sleep without a fuss on a thin mattress on the floor of the tent.  The fun really began when we went to bed and disturbed Ben, he woke up completely disorientated and screamed the forest down.  Nothing we could do would calm him, after half an hour of crying we put him in the car and turned on the his familiar nursery rhymes, within 1 minute he was calm and we were able to put him back to bed – thank god for modern technology in the bush!!!!  The second night he slept much better once he was more familiar with the tent.

We managed to do a couple of short hikes and used a baby hiking backpack given to us as a gift from my sister.  Ben loved the back pack and even managed to fall asleep in it, his head bobbing back and forth and we walked.   It was not the relaxing camping experience that we enjoyed before kids as we constantly needed to watch Ben and keep him entertained.  But all in all we had a good time and will do it again.

Baby Sling – Essential for a Plane Ride

Published by under Great Baby Gifts Ideas

When Ben was younger I carried him everywhere in a sling, it was a fantastic gift that a friend gave me.  I did not keep him in the sling all day but used it only when needed or when going out.  If he was unsettled he would sleep well in the sling and if I was out he could either sleep or just sit in it.  It was also great for breastfeeding in public as it shielded me and supported Ben’s body so that I did not have to hold all his weight.

I travelled interstate a few times and found that the sling was essential, I could have Ben close to me, he was comfortable and I was comfortable as I did not have to hold his weight.  It was also good for carrying him while pacing up and down the aisle.  A friend of mine recently went overseas with her 2 month old and I recommended using a sling, she purchased one and found it very useful on the long flight.

My son can sing!

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

I could not believe my ears when Ben started singing 3 notes to the nursery rhyme of ’10 in the bed’.  We have nursery rhymes on in the car all the time as it keeps Ben happy.  Without any help from me he just started singing the notes that go with the words ‘roll over, roll over’.  It is very cute hearing a little voice in the back of the car throughout that song…..

Thank You Cards

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

Finally got around to thanking people for the gifts they gave Ben for his first birthday party.   I did not think it was necessary to send out formal cards like we did when he was born, and frankly I did not have the time or inclination to do it.  But it is always nice to acknowledge a gift, especially if the person who gave it was not around when the gift was open.  So we took digital photos of Ben opening all his gifts and playing with them, or wearing them etc then popped them in an email with a short note to the person who gave the gift.  It was a great way of saying thanks and appreciated by those who gave the gifts!!
