Toy Sharing

Published by under Parenting Stuff

I heard about a great idea through the mothers at playgroup, it is the idea of Toy Sharing.  So, instead of laying out heaps of money for one toy for your child that he or she will love for a little while but then get sick of.  Team up with 4 other parents and pool your money to get a couple of good quality toys and swap them every week or month.  That way your child will not get bored of the same toy all the time and if it is a favorite toy it will suprisingly appear every month or so!!!   This also works great with books (especially when parents are sick of reading the same few all the time).  When your kids outgrow the toys you can either randomly divide up the toys between the parents to be used for a younger sibling etc, or sell them on ebay and with the money buy more!!!

Husband away makes a long day…..

Published by under Parenting Stuff

Chris has been working interstate for the past few days so I have been on my own with Ben.  The days have been very long without him here and without his help to look after Ben.  Even though I work part time and so have a couple of days a week on my own with Ben anyway, at least Chris is there in the morning and evening to change one nappy and play with Ben for a while.  But since Chris has been away dealing with a 15 month old on my own has not been easy and when 7pm bedtime comes along I must say it is a little bit of a relief…..

Day Care Getting Better

Published by under Parenting Stuff

It has only taken Ben 2 weeks in day care to start to feel comfortable there.  He still protests when I leave, but he is interacting alot more with the staff and other kids and the staff report that he is not crying all day as he did in his first week.  It is such a big change for a 15 month old kid, and an even bigger adjustment for his 385 month old mother!!!!  But it looks like things are getting better….

Day Care Blues

Published by under Parenting Stuff

I have dragged Ben along to 2 days of day care so far.  Each day I have called to see how he is doing and the report has always been the same – “it will get better but…. he has been crying most of the day, hasn’t slept well and is only soothed in someone’s arms with his blanket”.  This is very different to the Ben I know who is normally such a happy baby.  I feel pretty guilty most of the day and rush off after work to get him. When I pick him up he just looks like a sad lost kid.    Hopefully it will get better….. Jen

Sign for “Help” Learned in 2 days!

Published by under Baby Sign Language

Ben has recently been grunting and getting pretty frustrated with toys he cant work properly or furniture that he cant move or open.  I thought it would assist him if he knew how to sign ‘help’ so that he could ask for it when he needed.  So I started doing the sign for help (patting 2 hands on my chest) every time I said the word.  Low and behold 2 days later Ben was able to ask for help using the sign!!!  That is our record at the moment for speed in learning a sign and I was pretty impressed.  Granted he only uses one hand not two as the second hand usually has the toy in it that he needs help with.  But it is a distinct and different sign to the others he knows and he definitelyunderstands what it means.  So now Ben either just asks for help, or if I hear the familiar grunt I ask him what he wants and he signs back ‘help’.

This sign has been a definate help for me too!

First Day At Day Care

Published by under Parenting Stuff

I have been lucky that I have not had to go back to work until now.  At 15 months old Ben will now have to fend for himself in the big world of day care.  Today was a bit of a trial for him and me.  He has a place at a small community centre with only 38 kids, 8 in the baby room.  I dropped him off and spent half an hour getting him settled in and chatting to the staff and kids.  I was told that babies are more relaxed and comfortable in an environment when they see you getting on well with the staff and other kids.   I made sure I said goodbye and with a heavy heart left.

Luckily Ben did not cry or put on to much of a scene as I have heard other babies do when starting at day care.  I called every hour to see how he was doing and except for only having a very short sleep they reported that he was doing fine.   Having no baby to occupy be physically (only mentally) I went shopping and got a sandpit for Ben.

When I picked Ben up he looked a little lost, he looked contented but was in the arms of one of the staff members and obviously did not want to be out of secure arms.  He was happy to see me and we both survived our first day……

Who would have thought a wee could be funny….

Published by under Parenting Stuff

At 15 months old Ben seems to be getting to know his body a little bit.  Most days he has about half an hour of ‘naked time’ which he loves.  Yesterday he was playing on his own in one corner of the room and let out the most hysterical laugh.  When I went over to see what he was doing I found a puddle of wee and the last bits coming out, Ben was still laughing……. Lucky we have floor boards and it was a quick clean up.

From Breastfeeds to Cuddles

Published by under Parenting Stuff

Neither Ben nor I seem to be missing breastfeeding, which is good.  The nice thing is that Ben has started to give really nice cuddles.  He often comes up to me and rests his head on my chest or tummy and is happy to stay there for a few minutes and be cuddled.

I love it and he seems toas well!!  I hope it continues!

Farewell to Breastfeeds

Published by under Parenting Stuff

Ben is 15 months old now and I have decided that it is time for our Breastfeeding relationship to come to an end.   I have been doing 2 feeds a day, at 7am and 6.30pm both of which have now been replaced with ‘milk from the fridge’ as opposed to ‘milk from mummy’.  I have loved breastfeeding Ben but felt that now was a good time to stop.  I thought that I would be sad about stopping breastfeeding but I have not really been sad about it at all.  Perhaps I feel this way because Ben is at an age that he is quite clingy and very demanding of me so I feel his emotional need now rather than a nutritional need.  He still occasionally stares up at me, pleading with his eyes and does the sign for ‘milk’, each time I almost give in to give him a breastfeed but I have been strong and instead have changed the subject & given him a drink of water or milk.

I am glad that I have kept the breastfeeds up (although there have been some tough times) and I was pretty happy to find out this week about a recent  Australian / New Zealand study showing that for every month of breastfeeding up to 15 months of age the chances of developing asthma dramatically decreased by 7% for every month!!!!

Instant Chalk-Board Table

Published by under Creative Baby Ideas

We received a hand-me-down kids table and chairs and Ben has enjoyed sitting at a baby size table to eat snacks and do activities on.  However, the table was not in the best state, with some of the paint coming off and it looked a little scruffy around the edges, so we needed to give it a paint.

Chris, my husband took an outings to the hardware store (again) and a few hours later came back with black-board paint.  He painted the top of the table with a the dark green black-board paint and now the table not only looks like a new piece of furniture, but Ben is now able to draw all over it with chalk day after day after day!!!
